Spinal surgery was unnecessary, claims patient and family

On Behalf of | Apr 22, 2015 | Failure To Diagnose |

People are going to make mistakes. It’s just in our nature. No matter how much training we receive or expertise that we may have, we will always make mistakes — both big and small — that remind us of just how fallible we really are. In certain fields, this may not be that big of deal. But in other fields, mistakes can be life or death, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the medical field.

When a medical professional makes a mistake during a patient’s visit, it can lead that patient down a terrible path — one filled with potentially catastrophic or even fatal consequences. So when that mistake is identified, the victimized patient needs to carefully consider their next steps. Will they file a medical malpractice lawsuit to hold the medical professionals responsible?

In one case, a family has moved forward with medical malpractice claims against doctors that seem to have misdiagnosed a man’s spinal condition. The man complained of leg weakness in April 2011, and a month later he was in for spinal surgery on the advise of his medical professionals.

However, it appears that there was another medical issue at fault for the man’s condition — something called a syrinx — that didn’t necessarily require surgery. There were other non-invasive options that could have helped the man.

The surgery left him in a worse physical state, as he now needs help to walk and experiences pain in his legs. He and his wife are filing suit against the medical professional for misdiagnosing him and for medical malpractice.
