C-sections and common medical mistakes

On Behalf of | Apr 18, 2019 | Surgical Errors |

As far as surgery goes, it does not get much more routine than a cesarean-section. These surgeries happen every single day. Thousands and thousands of children enter the world in this relatively safe manner. In many cases, having the surgery is far safer for the baby and the mother than trying to have a natural birth.

That said, it’s dangerous to assume that a C-section is a routine surgery with no risks. There are still major risks. Mothers and babies suffer life-changing injuries. Some pass away. You have to take this into account.

To help show what the risks look like, here are some of the most common mistakes doctors make when delivering in this manner:

  • The mother does not get enough painkillers and is both awake and able to feel the pain during the surgery.
  • The mother or child suffers broken bones during the procedure.
  • The timing is off; either the doctor rushes the patient into the C-section too early or they put it off too long, and it becomes an emergency.
  • The patient’s blood pressure drops to an extremely low level.
  • The C-section happens successfully, but then the mother develops an infection after the fact.
  • The mother loses far too much blood and is at risk for all kinds of complications.
  • The doctor makes a mistake, such as lacerating the bowels. This results in an emergency at the time or the need for more surgery in the future.

These are just a few of the potential mistakes and complications. If this happens to you, make sure you know how to seek compensation in a medical malpractice lawsuit.
