What are some common surgical errors?

On Behalf of | Aug 9, 2017 | Surgical Errors |

Although most surgeons are extremely careful not to cause injuries to their patients, there are some who make mistakes. To err is human, but it’s still the responsibility of those providing care to take as many precautions as possible. In the case that you are injured, that party should be held responsible.

There are many different kinds of surgical errors, some of which you can help prevent. For example, if you are allergic to certain medications, you need to tell the provider ahead of time. If you confirm those allergies shortly before the surgery, you can be more confident that the surgical team has everything correct in your charts.

Wrong-site surgeries are another problem. To help prevent these, it’s important to verify where the surgical site is on a day prior to the operation. It’s a good idea to keep notes about the operation and to verify where the surgical incisions will be. If there are any mistakes, like a surgeon drawing the marks on the wrong side of your body, speak up. It’s better to be wrong about what you think your operation is and to have someone double check than to find out you’ve had the wrong body part operated on.

Another error you may not have considered is excessive scarring due to poor or careless suturing. It’s vital that the surgeon sutures the wound carefully and with the appropriate level of skill.

If any of these errors affect you, you may have the right to sue. Your health is of the utmost importance, and errors put you at risk.
