Case alleging that doctor errors killed Joan Rivers is settled

On Behalf of | May 18, 2016 | Doctor Errors |

Oregon readers might be aware of the details regarding the death of comedian Joan Rivers, and that her daughter, Melissa Rivers, filed a medical malpractice claim against those believed to be responsible. Rivers alleged that her mother’s death was due to doctor errors at the clinic where her mother had gone for a “routine” procedure. Recently, that case was settled, and the family is said to be able to put the matter to rest.

The comedian went in for one procedure, but once she was under anesthesia, another doctor came in and proceeded to perform a procedure that Joan Rivers had not authorized. Reportedly, the anesthesiologist who was present questioned whether that procedure should be done, but it was performed anyway. Once it was complete, the other doctor performed the intended procedure. After that was done, several selfies were taken with an unconscious Rivers.

It was then that things took another turn for the worse when Rivers’ vital signs began to deteriorate. For approximately 10 minutes, the medical staff that were present failed to realize that her airway was obstructed, and this made their efforts useless. She did not receive the appropriate medical care to clear her airway and possibly save her life. As a result, she died.

Some Oregon residents might be able to empathize with Melissa Rivers’ situation because they, too, lost a loved one to doctor errors. They also retain the right to file a medical malpractice claim seeking damages for their losses. As was the case for Melissa Rivers, a settlement could provide those families with the best resolution to their claims, but if not, the option to litigate could still available.
