Understanding C-section risks

On Behalf of | Jan 28, 2020 | Surgical Errors |

A C-section is still major surgery. People often do not think of it that way since it is so common. However, it is a serious procedure that carries a high level of risk.

This isn’t to frighten you out of having one. At times, doctors choose to perform a C-section because it is actually safer for the mother and child. Thousands of mothers have these procedures without any complications every year. It very well may be the best decision for your family.

That said, it is essential for people to understand the risks. Some of the potential complications from this type of major surgery include the following:

  • Infection of the intestines or the bladder
  • Infection at the surgical site, which can prevent the incision from healing properly
  • Inflammation of your uterus after the C-section is over
  • Excessive bleeding, which could be internal or external
  • An amniotic fluid embolism, which is when you end up with fetal material or amniotic fluid in your bloodstream

It is also worth noting that some C-sections can increase the risks for future pregnancies. Complications that women encounter the next time may actually stem from a previous procedure. Many doctors will tell mothers that they can have one or two children via a C-section, but it gets more risky every time. Therefore, they will not want them to keep having children and having C-sections beyond that.

Has a doctor made a mistake during a C-section or any other type of surgery? If so, be sure that you and your family are aware of your legal rights.
