Google AI finds breast cancer that doctors miss

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2020 | Failure To Diagnose |

You know that detecting breast cancer as early as possible is often the key to treatment and higher survival rates. So, who should you have examine those scans to see if you have cancer or not? You may assume it should be your doctor, but new studies have found that Google AI actually does a better job. It detects cancer more often than even trained human medical professionals.

That’s not to say that the AI runs the tests itself. But, after the mammogram is carried out, someone has to examine the scans to see if there is evidence of cancer. This is a very common screening tactic. And, even when doctors sometimes overlook cancer, the AI tends to find it in those scans.

This is a big breakthrough, though the reports are very recent, and there is certainly much to be done. One good thing is that it may allow computer-based systems to find cancer in people who do have the disease but who do not have any symptoms. A big issue with all types of cancer is that by the time symptoms show up, the disease can be in a late stage. It may be too late to treat. If the AI can find it sooner, treatment can start right away.

The AI could also back up human doctors. If they fail to diagnose breast cancer, could the computer raise red flags so that they take a second look? Would that save lives?

Unfortunately, this report also underscores that doctors are not perfect, and they do miss things. If this happens to you, make sure you know what legal options you have.
