Hospital negligence injures more people than it kills

Any death due to medical error is tragic, and reports indicate that nearly 400,000 people die each year from medical and/or hospital negligence throughout the country. However, 10 to 20 times more people suffer injuries at the hands of doctors, nurses and other hospital staff. Hospital negligence can cause serious injury that leaves an Oregon resident with a debilitating and/or permanent condition.

Mother says doctor errors killed her son

In Nov. 2012, a man suffered an injury at work that required surgery and a cast to be put on his leg. By Dec. 18, 2012, he was dead, and his mother blames doctor errors. As many Oregon residents would do in her place, she filed a medical malpractice claim against the doctor in 2014.

Botched diagnostic tests could lead to hospital negligence claims

Oregon readers may not think that a story about a baby who was taken to the hospital where the child was diagnosed and treated for Influenza A is newsworthy. However, that baby died because a botched test led to the incorrect diagnosis. As it turns out, numerous diagnostic tests are botched every year, some of which lead to hospital negligence claims.

Surgical errors involving medications occur in half of surgeries

Oregon readers may take interest in te results of a study published in Anesthesiology's Oct. 2015 issue. After reviewing nearly 275 surgical procedures performed at a hospital on the East Coast known for its patient safety, it was determined that surgical errors involving medication occurred in one out of every two surgeries. Of particular concern is the fact that the hospital in question had already taken steps to eliminate medication errors in surgery.
